On Campus Accommodation

Some institutions have accommodation available on their campus. This is ideal if you want to live with other students from the same institution and close to your place of study. These are typically multi-room residences where you are provided with a bedroom with a single bed, desk and chair and storage space. Bathrooms are commonly shared.

Purpose-Built Student Accommodation

These are residences specialising in purpose-built student housing for students from any institution. Options range from studio apartments to shared rooms with up to eight beds, with shared communal areas and facilities.

Independent Renting of a House or a Flat

There are a number of unit complexes or houses specifically for students in Brisbane. In most cases, students will rent the entire house or flat, but there are also opportunities to rent a single bedroom, and share a lounge room, kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities with other students who have been selected by the management.

Most rental properties will require you to pay a bond up front. A bond is used as security and is usually equivalent to the amount of four weeks’ rent. This will cover any money owing at the end of the tenancy for any damage to the property.

Rental costs vary depending on the accommodation style, type and suburb. You can find average rental costs by searching for “median rents” on the Residential Tenancies Authority website. Some institutions provide listings of flats or houses in the area, so check with your institution if this is a service they offer.

Home Stay

Home stay is an opportunity to live with an Australian family and experience Australian life and culture by participating in the daily routine of the host family's life.

Host families take an active interest in their students and assist them to assimilate into their new environment. Typically, a home stay includes breakfast, dinner and a packed lunch if required. Students are responsible for the costs of washing, ironing, telephone and transport.

Youth Hostels and Backpackers

Hostels provide budget-oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a bed and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen. Rooms can be mixed or single-sex, although private rooms may also be available. These can be a very good short-term option while you are settling in Brisbane and looking for more permanent accommodation.
